How do we approach work in this country? What do we value in our work lives? What has worked for us in the past, and what will work for us in the future?
Moderated by multidisciplinary performance artist Bonita Oliver and composer/pianist Dorian Wallace, this panel of activists, artists, economists, and Co-Op educators will open a discussion with the aim to offer solutions. As the numbers suggest, nearly half of our US population is currently unemployed due to Covid-19.
How do we move forward from here and create a better world where we don’t simply survive, but thrive?
Our panelists:
Dr. Linda Bailey-McWeeney is the founder of the Reggae Math Foundation and an adjunct Assistant Professor of Economics at College of Staten Island. She is also an aspiring musician!
Benjamin Ferguson has been an organizer with the Industrial Workers of The World for over 20 years.
Laura Friedman has been an organizer of one kind or another for her entire career. Laura began her work life as a VISTA volunteer working as a paralegal and welfare rights organizer, went on to become a union organizer for many years and from there became the Policy Director for Congressman Nadler. Today, she has come full circle, and is very active in her community trying to protect it from the ravages of luxury over development.
Bob Greenberg is the Vice President of the New York City Labor Choir.
Robert Hughes is a Steward in Unite Here! Lo 23 for 7 years. He's is also the Chair of DSA Central Indiana Chapter.
Annie Levin is a co-founder of Sing in Solidarity: a socialist movement choir that draws its repertoire from the rich tradition of international revolutionary song. She writes middle grade and adult fiction and nonfiction and her recent work can be found in Public Seminar, The Indypendent, and The Maine Review.
Luci Murphy is a native of D.C. where she is a vocalist who often leads group singing, and worked for 14 years as a medical interpreter of Spanish and English. Currently she provides music therapy to returning citizens, and leads songs at Poor People’s Campaign events. She has a long history of community activism, especially working with children at risk. She has visited Lebanon to observe Palestinian Refugee Camps, China just before the normalization of relations with the U.S., Brazil for a grass-roots organizing conference, and Cuba to oppose U.S. travel restrictions.
Adam Trott is Director of Member Relations at Shared Capital Cooperative, and Executive Director of the Valley Alliance of Worker Co-operatives.
Sing in Solidarity is a socialist movement choir in New York City that performs music from the international and domestic left. Its mission is to disseminate anti-capitalist music, build internationalism, and unite the struggles of working and oppressed peoples through culture and song.
